Walk around the front of the pub, join the public bridle path and you have arrived. Mereworth Woods are a large area of woodland and scrub just between Maidstone and West Malling.
During the Second World War the area was one of many in the South East taken over by the British Army for training purposes and as you walk around the woods you can sometimes see tank traps and other concrete structures.
Today Mereworth Woods are a wildlife haven as well as being a wonderful place for a gentle ramble. "I grew up near these woods and almost every weekend we kids would go spend our time playing in the woods, acting out games and make believe situations. It was great and what is even better is that when I go there now with my own kids, they do exactly the same thing as I did when I was young"
The woods are quite large and you could easily spend hours there without seeing anyone else. A great free place to visit. - Heidi Boon
